More Cents than Sense? Drill Press Mill Upgrade, Part 1, Building the Column
It's time to upgrade my drill press milling machine and I go way over board. Like a V8 in a shopping cart. In this video, I build a new, better column and table. I use square tubing, add some linear guide rails, build a new work table and fill the whole thing with epoxy granite. It turns out great. This is part 1 of a two part video. The second part will be out later this year.
Many thanks to @metalmusings for doing the legwork and providing the recipe for the epoxy granite. I had fun making this one. I hope you enjoy.

In today's Not a "Shorts" Short, I share an alternative to Rim Tape that is way, way better. Scotch 8898. Much better than what DT Swiss, Muckoff or Stan's will sell you. Let's stick it to big-Rim-Tape together.
Forget Plasti-Dip - Heat Shrink is Better - #notashortsshort
Переглядів 604Місяць тому
Why is Plasti Dip always dried out? - In today's Not-a-Shorts-Short, I use some 1/2" heat shrink to make new handle grips for a pair of pliers, because my Plasti-dip has dried out. Like it always does. If you run into the same problem, give heat shrink a try.

In today's Not-a-Shorts-Short, I show you one way to save your old eyeballs and label those tiny tools (so you can actually read the things). Heat shrink, a label maker and a bit of time and you won't be squinting like I do, anymore.
Filling my milling machine with epoxy sand to increase rigidity.
Переглядів 2,1 тис.2 місяці тому
I recently filled my milling machine with epoxy sand to try and improve vibration damping and rigidity. In this video, I show you how I filled the base and column with epoxy sand, what I used, and how it, how I kept the epoxy from running out and how it turned out. It wasn't quite as good as epoxy granite, but easier to make and pour. Density came out at 89 lb/ft^3 which isn't freat. I don't ge...

Here's what a bad EGR valve sounds like (P0404)
Переглядів 3,1 тис.5 місяців тому
This is a bad EGR valve which returned a P0404 trouble code. This one is a Delphi EGR valve that is only a few months old. Really easy to tell when they fail if you have a scanner that will let you control the duty cycle. They make noise and the EGR pintle position is all over the place. Solution is to replace the EGR valve. The P0404 will clear on its own once the new valve is installed.
My kid wanted Zwift on her bike for Christmas so I built it for her
Переглядів 1,7 тис.6 місяців тому
My wife rides on Zwift. My daughter really wants to ride with her. She rides a 16" Woom bike which is WAY too small for a smart trainer. In this video, I show how to modify a smart trainer for use with her 16" wheels. This is part 1 on how to get your kids on Zwift where we look at the hardware. In part 2, I'll walk you through the software and how to get such a small bike to work with Zwift.

Specialized Gravel Bike - Convert 90's Mountain Bike to Gravel Bike
I found your channel because of the original conversion. It was excellent then and it's even more excellenter (it's a word) now. Absurdity? Is there any better descriptor to use for doing something awesome? I think not. Keep up the great work.
Wow, thank you!
I intend to use laminated thick yellow birch and 1/4" (6.3mm) AL 5052-H32 for mine, but one can also get laser cut plates (± .005" Typ) , CRS Flat Bars (much better tolerances as is vs HRS) probably between ± .001" to ± .009", often dead on. Or use aluminium extrusions, HSS and plates. 6061-T6 Rectangular tubes, plates, angles, channels, will likely be stiffer than chinesium cast iron anyway. Square corners for bolted and round for welded connections. Geometry (the shape, design and fastening of the frame) is often more important than material strength when it comes to stiffness. Almost all common tools for woodwork will machine aluminium, but not steel. A thin layer of epoxy, clear coat/paint or superglue will protect the aluminium from the ferrous metal connection.
Really enjoyed your video
hey man thanks so much for keeping the site up all these years. have had a extremely neglected 92 xj sitting in my garage and am starting the process of getting it running again. you and everyone else on there are huge helps
Great to hear it. The XJ is a great bike to wrench on. Reach out if you need help with anything. I don't own one anymore but I do remember a lot about them.
So the answer is “more steel and granite epoxy”. Seems reasonably overkill 💪🏼
I was looking into buying a mini mill to use for a couple of my hobbies I am into. You have given me a better solution than buying a mini mill. I especially like the use of the square tubing and filling with epoxy mix. The linear rails and bearings are also a better solution to having ways that would last longer but the rails and bearings are easy to replace. Thank you and cannot wait for part 2.
That's fantastic, thank you. I am going to do my best to have part 2 out before end of July. I need to build the head and film it which is what will hold me up. I'm looking forward to trying this out and seeing how it does.
Excellent and interesting as usual RA
Speaking as someone who has a drill press and wishes it was a mill, I'm impressed.
I've watched Blondiehacks' 40 part (so-far) series on model steam trains that isn't even half-way finished. 2 parts is **NOTHING**
A fellow person of culture, I see
At least Blondiehacks video is progressing forward nicely. Been waiting 7 years for Clickspring to finish the Antikythera build.
Very nice work sir
Dude you are really going deep on that mod, i gave up on modding my drill press and bought a Sieg Mini mill hehe. Nice video!
Right on
Noice
Shame about tire clearance, but 32mm is plenty for cyclocross and all-road bike.
wow I had no idea you could braze on the caliper mount like that. no concerns with strength of the seat stay?
I haven't had any trouble with it, either flexing or failing, at least so far. I think it's alright.
@@RobertAdairWorkshop thanks for the update and thanks for sharing this overall, I'm very much considering trying this myself.
Hey Rob, just rebuilt my nsu, but not firing. Wondering how to leak down or compression check this bike
It should be the same as other engines. Use a compression tester in the spark plug hole. I was going to give you the compression numbers but they're not listed in the NSU engine rebuild manual.
Everyone else - "Let's build a gravel bike" - proceeds to clean the frame and put a brand new groupset and drop bar on. This guy - "Let's build a gravel bike" - proceeds to make his own thru-axles and disc mounts! You have a new subscriber.
Thanks for joining. Appreciate it.
Hi, I just wanted to ask your advice. I just bought a carbon frame secondhand, and as I was descending the other day, I heard this crack. I hope I haven't damaged either the steerer or the seatpost. I need to check them now, but if I have what would you recommend to fix the steerer? A compression plug by say Specialized (which one would you recommend?) or the ENVE or Cervelo insert? And do you have tye links for these inserts with epoxy glue? I'll check both tonight. Can you fix a seatpost also, the same way? Thanks for the video. I will be doing a lot of downhill so I need to rely on these two things to prevent failure and hence an accident.
Are you sure it wasn't your water bottle or seat bag banging against the frame that made the noise? I have an Emonda which I swore I cracked in half when I hit a frost-heave, but I tore it apart, gave it a full inspection, and didn't find any damage. Decided it was my water bottle slipping up out of the cage and hitting the underside of the top tube. If I were you, I wouldn't repair a seatpost unless it is one of those integrated posts. Seatposts are cheap (relatively speaking, I think I pay about $120 every time I buy a new one). For the fork, regardless of whether you find a crack or not, it might be worth the peace-of-mind to install one of the Cervelo inserts. I trust the bond-in type more than compression plugs. It bonds in with regular epoxy (Gorilla glue and JB Weld are common manufacuters; it's a two-part that you mix together).
@@RobertAdairWorkshop I am sure because I have neither on the bike at the minute (no bottle cages or seatbag). I inspected the top of the steerer today because I changed the stem and it looks fine. Went for a ride and no creaks or cracking sounds. It might be the seatpist because I haven't torqued it to the correct setting I don't have a torque wrench that size). The seatpost is one of those that has a wedge in the back (I really don't like that design at all). Might have to go to LBS for them to check it and torque it to the correct setting. Yeah, I might do as you say with the steerer for peace of mind. Thanks again.
Man I have watched a lot of videos and you're the the only one that points out exactly what needs to be happening straight down to the screws that need to be unbolted. Thank you for posting this video. This was the only one that was helpful
Thanks! Appreciate it. I get to pull the box again this year to fix some quarter panel rust and the video helps me remember what I did too.
awesome content, greetings from Indonesia
This is a piece of JUNK
Great video. I recently replaced the 3/16 brake line from the front to rear on a 2001 Dakota club cab. In my case the tube nuts were M10 by 1.0 bubble flares. I bought non magnetic nickel copper tubing at a local parts store.
Great video. Did you find 1 HP to be sufficient?
Yeah, I’ve been really happy with it. I haven’t found a need for more power, yet. The epoxy fill really improved the machine.
Great gift!!
great tipps thank you Robert!
I don't care for Gravel Bikes, but I love this conversion... also the music really shines... subscribed!
That's awesome. Thank you!
Why do people do this instead of buying a new bike? It's because of the love of the build. It's always fun to tinker around with bikes and giving them new life.
Good looking build. I really enjoy building a bike from the frame up, and converting the type of bike as well. Great job with the frame modifications, and the through axle conversion.
Great job, a beautiful result!
this modernizing process was really smart
Recently bought a 12" swing Atlas. The booger is old, but seems to be very stout. Will be going through every thing as time allows. But I was particularly interested in your VFD addition. I have those on three of my CNC mills, and plan to put one on the Atlas. Thanks for doing this. Looks really great!
Best conversion i’ve seen in youtube. The cleanest TA conversion.
Thank you. Appreciate it.
brilliant design excellent building thank you
I own a Gary Fisher Paragon from 90s they are awesome!!
You are one smart guy , I am car painter by trade , I'm very impressed, my friend Chip Foose has to see your channel!!!😊
Wow, what a brilliant video! I was born in 1973, raced as a teenager on these type of frames in Poland in the late 1980s. I was shocked how easy this conversion went for you. And the Winamp part was great. Unforgettable times.
That sounds amazing. I'm a 1978 model, myself. These bikes were big for me in my late teens. I was in college dorms with a T1 line in 1998 and winamp was all the rage then. We would share files over the university network and make our own Winamp skins. I remember it fondly.
@@RobertAdairWorkshop and those visualizations were priceless. So trippy sometimes :)

thats a really nice bike man! congrats!!!
Hi, What ISO to flat/post mount adapters do you use?
Haven’t seen any updates on the mini lathe since you did the treadmill upgrade. Do you still have it and use it? Does it excel at anything over the Atlas? Love to hear your thoughts and perspective since it’s been a while.
Hey, John. No, I no longer own it. I sold it to guy on Craigslist last year, just about broke even. The Atlas lathe is just quite a bit bigger than the mini lathe was so I can do a lot more with it, and the 3/4hp motor and VFD gives it plenty of power. The mini lathe did a lot of good work for me. I turned down the shafts for the surface grinder with it, made a number of bicycle parts and it even fixed a defective harmonic balancer in a pinch, when I needed it. I've no disappointment with the mini lathe. The Atlas is just a better tool for what I use a lathe for. But the Atlas also cost about 5X what the mini lathe did and it takes up a lot more space in the shop.
No part 2 yet?
Ooof. I have the footage for part 2 but never made the video due to lack of interest. But you're interested, so I'll get it up. The gist is, we had to go to a 20" wheel to work with Zwift because of their software side settings. The 16" just didn't work. But the trainer mods remained the same. Okay, yeah, I do need to make the video.
Nice! Gary would approve (especially the grabbing it out of the trash bit.)
Boa noite amigo ficou linda bike pronto pra o pedal
Great videos in this series on the xj600. I really appreciate such detail and indepth explanation. You've given me confidence to tackle some of these jobs on my own xj600! Cheers !
Hi Robeet. Nice job. I have the same Max from 1953.. I made the engine in 1988 for a friend. Now the bike is mine and I rebuild it again
It wont mess the clear coat or paint of the wheel?? I have a car with about 15 years of neglected baked on brake dust anything i did didnt do anythng to clean them up. I tried iron remover wheel cleaner but it removes about 5%. I wet sanded one wheel and didt know that when the water dries the clear coat will be faded so messed up one of the wheels but it cleaned it. You are my last hope that i can clean them so if you got any other tips for cleaning them please share. Waiting for your response about the paint.
I’ve only done it on these wheels, but I did all four and it didn’t damage clear coat on any of them. It might be problematic on raw aluminum or unpainted steel, though.
Спасибо вам. Теперь можно купить колеса на 142 и переделать на 135 мм
This was insanely well done. Really awesome restomod and great ideas I'm sure others will use for similar projects.
